History of The Scott Family in Spruce Run
History of The Scott Family in Spruce Run
(1795 – 2018)
# 1
Our first documented residents of Spruce Run were:
Great-great-great grandparents, Henry O. and Elizabeth Criner Scott
Documented by 1940 newspaper article noting that Henry built the ferry
that crossed the river between Spruce Run and Pulaski County.
Family stories say Atlas Burnette (Kack) Scott piloted the ferry.
(“Goodwin’s Ferry used to shuttle people across the New River near Virginia 605 and Virginia 625.
The Spruce Run mill and ferry were built by Henry Scott before 1855.
This photograph was taken in 1940, just two years before the ferry closed.”)

Scott’s Bottom
According to a new-found cousin, the New River Campground that was
owned, when I was young, by Lethia and Ed Duncan. The same property was, in the past, owned by our Scott family and listed on geological maps as Scott’s Bottom.
Fishing was good. Lethia holding “catch of the day”.
Maybe this is where the Scott ancestors farmed and gardened?
Lethia and Ed built a rough raft for use on the water. We were allowed to take it out on the river
and steer it with a long pole…I loved it!
Picture was taken from the raft about 1960.

Wonderful story!
Atlas Scott(Kack) was my husband Bobby’s Father. Bobby’s Mother, was Ollie Comer-Scott.
